Factor VIII or otherwise known as anti-haemophilic factor is a cofactor of factor IXa which in the presence of Ca+2 and phospholipids form a complex that converts Factor X to Factor Xa.
Factor VIII deficient plasma is chemically depleted thus enabling von Willebrand factor to remain in the plasma, but still giving a factor VIII level under 0.01iu/ml. All other factors and fibrinogen remain as normal.
